Because array architecture and local requirements vary, buyers should evaluate a manufacturer against a project specific input schedule rather than a generic enclosure photograph.
Prepare a complete request for quotation
The request should state the module type, modules per string, number of strings, inverter or power conversion input arrangement and the environmental conditions. Maximum string open circuit voltage must be assessed at the lowest applicable cell temperature. Current information should include module short circuit current and the design basis required by the local code and engineer.
A qualified custom combiner box manufacturer should also receive the required voltage class, number of inputs, output arrangement, cable sizes, gland direction, enclosure material, ingress protection target and installation location. If string monitoring, surge protection, disconnecting means or communication ports are needed, they should be described as functions rather than left to assumption.
Verify the protection concept
The supplier should provide a single line diagram and component schedule showing string protective devices, busbars, output switching, surge protective devices, grounding points and monitoring equipment. Device ratings must be coordinated with the array voltage, possible reverse current, conductor ratings and downstream equipment. The responsible designer should confirm the applicable standards and local code.
Ask for exact component makes and models, certificates that match those components and a formal process for substitutions. Thermal design deserves particular attention because high current connections, solar heating and enclosure sealing can raise internal temperature. Terminal spacing, torque values and maintainable cable routing should be visible in the manufacturing drawings.
Inspect manufacturing and documentation
Evaluation should include incoming component control, busbar and wiring workmanship, labeling, torque records and final inspection. A factory acceptance plan can check continuity, insulation, switching functions, monitoring channels and configuration against the approved drawings. Project specific test results are more useful than a general quality statement.
The handover package should contain approved drawings, bill of materials, test records, installation instructions, spare part references and serial traceability. International buyers should also confirm packaging, shipping documentation and after sales responsibilities. A manufacturer that can control these details is better positioned to reproduce the approved design across a large solar project.
